Relaxing Epsom Salt Bath

Epsom salt gets its name from the Epsom region in England, where it was originally discovered in mineral-rich spring water. Despite its name, Epsom salt isn’t actually a salt, but a naturally occurring mineral compound made up of magnesium and sulfate.

Known for their health benefits, especially when absorbed through the skin during a bath, Epsom salt baths are a simple, affordable and relaxing way to nurture both your body and mind.

Though there is more anecdotal rather than scientific evidence, when dissolved in warm bath water, Epsom salt creates a soothing and therapeutic experience.

What are the benefits?

Relaxation and Stress Relief – Magnesium plays a role in regulating the body’s stress response by lowering levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) in the body. Soaking in a warm Epsom salt bath can help relax muscles and calm the nervous system.

Muscle and Joint Relief – The soothing properties of Epsom salt are especially beneficial for sore muscles, aches, and stiffness by helping to regulate calcium absorption in muscles. Athletes often turn to Epsom salt baths after intense workouts to ease tension and promote recovery.

Improved Sleep – Magnesium is known for its ability to help regulate sleep patterns. Soaking in an Epsom salt bath before bedtime can help calm the mind and prepare your body for a restful night’s sleep.

Detoxification – The sulfate in Epsom salt may help draw out toxins from the body, supporting your natural detoxification processes and leaving you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

What Makes Epsom Salt Beneficial?

Magnesium is crucial for over 300 biochemical processes in the body, including:

  • muscle function

  • energy production

  • regulation of inflammation

Unfortunately, many people don’t get enough magnesium in their diet, making Epsom salt baths an effective way to boost magnesium levels and experience its many benefits. The sulfate component aids in the absorption of nutrients, helping the body detoxify and metabolize food more efficiently.

How to Use Epsom Salt in a Bath

For a typical bath, add about 2 cups of Epsom salt to warm water and soak for about 15 minutes. The heat of the water helps to dissolve the salt and allows your skin to absorb the minerals.

Incorporating Epsom salt baths into your self-care routine is an easy, natural way to unwind, soothe aching muscles, and improve your overall well-being. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or recovery, a warm Epsom salt bath can provide a much-needed moment of peace and healing.

As a massage therapist, I find that incorporating a weekly epsom salt bath into my self-care routine has been so valuable in helping me feel my best.

Book a massage appointment today and take an epsom salt bath after your treatment. You will feel amazing!
